“I thought I knew myself.  Yet, after spending time with the disabled participants I found a side of myself that I never knew. I get paid in smiles”!

Whether it’s assisting students onto a chair lift, helping an instructor guide a blind person down the slopes or repairing broken equipment, the volunteers at Disabled Sports USA keep us in motion!  Recruited from all over Northern California and Nevada, Disabled Sports volunteers receive first-class training on how to ensure safety and high standards at the Tahoe Adaptive Ski School (TASS) located at Alpine Meadows Ski Resort in California.

During the 2003 ~ 2004 ski season, over 1,500 classes were given at TASS.  Every year over 120 people spend approximately 2,400 hours ensuring that our programs run smoothly and safely.   They donate their time, energy and expertise to assist our students learn about recreational sports and the thrills that can come from spending a day in the outdoors.

These individuals are our volunteers and we would not exist without them.

When we ask, “What brings you back?”  the number one answer is simply, “the students.”  Every volunteer has a cadre of stories about the great days, the challenging days, the lessons learned and most of all, the smiles.  As one volunteer said, “You’ll never know how valuable you can be to someone until you look into the eyes of a nine-year-old who had been told she could never ski.  She smiles after a perfect run and says very simply, “Thank you.”  It will melt your heart every time.” Join our family and discover the joys of introducing outdoor recreation to people of all abilities. It will change your life. We invite you to join us this year as a volunteer. You will receive training in how to facilitate our adaptive sports program, how to assist participants and how to handle different kinds of adaptive equipment.  After two days of training, your obligation of 4 days for the winter will be easy to keep!

If you are interested in becoming part of our volunteer family, call Cindy Smith at the Tahoe Program Center, (530) 581-4161.  We do have an application process, so apply early to ensure a spot on our winter volunteer roster!  It’s an experience you’ll never forget!

“I get more out of working with the students and the staff than I could ever possibly give”.
